Remington Model 1863 percussion contract rifle a.k.a. "Zouave Rifle" Manufactured between 1862-1865 for a total production of approximately 12,500 rifles. .58 caliber percussion, single shot muzzleloader. 33" round barrel fastened by two brass barrel bands. Large lug located on right side of barrel muzzle for attaching a saber type bayonet. Blue barrel, casehardened lock and hammer, brass barrel bands, trigger guard, forearm tip, and buttplate. Sling swivels mounted on front barrel band and trigger guard. "Tulip head" style steel ramrod. Lock is marked front of hammer with an American Eagle over "U.S." and two lines "REMINGTONS/ILION, N.Y.". Rear of hammer is marked "1863". Barrel breech is marked "1863" and "V/P" over eaglehead proof. Government inspection cartouches located two places on left side of stock opposite of the lockplate. The name "Zouave" for this rifle is undetermined, the official name as listed in government contracts was "Harpers Ferry Pattern" CONDITION: Excellent overall. Barrel retains 90+% original blue turning patina with light freckling. Mottled case color on lockplate and hammer. Brass components are clean with light patina. Wood is excellent showing little wear. Bore is excellent, bright and clean. -MKS-
