These guns were made by Elijah and Asa Waters & Nathaniel Whitmore of Sutton, Massachusetts. 4,270 of these were believed to have been delivered against a contract for 5,000. Eagle over "US" in oval over "SUTTON" on the lock just ahead of the hammer. Dated 1810 at the rear of the lock. The gun does not appear to have any other markings. Original flint configuration with spring retained bands. Missing the sling swivel loops. CONDITION: In great untouched "as found" condition. Retains a pleasing dark patina with areas of light surface rust and some pitting, most prevalent around the touch hole. Wood has some dings and handling marks with a crack extending along the top of the comb from the buttplate for 4", and another extending for 4 - 1/2" back from the end of the barrel tang to the base of the comb. There is a crack in the right side of the forend between the rear and middle bands with a 2" piece of wood missing. Markings are clear. Bore is rusty with pitting. Rear lock screw is a replacement. Fine mechanical function. The ramrod is a bit short. GR
