This gun was originally made as a "Sappers Musketoon", featuring a bayonet lug on the barrel and side of the front band. From the 1855 barrel date, only 80 of these guns were produced that year. Our of a total production of 830 produced, 228 were subsequently altered to the Artillery pattern. This is one of those 228 that were modified. Lockplate is marked with Eagle/ “US” in front of hammer. Rear of hammer is marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1854”. The barrel has the standard “VP” and eagle head proofs and dated on tang “1855”. Outline of the bayonet lug on the left side of the muzzle. CONDITION: Metal has a pleasing cleaned appearance with some areas of light pitting and discoloration. Markings are clear. There is an old crack in the hammer. Wood has been cleaned with several small restorations but is sound. Ramrod has moderate pitting overall, with the cupped tip being a welded on restoration. Fine mechanical function. GR
