This is your standard pattern 1853 Enfield musket with an 1862 dated lock under TOWER. "24" proofs on the left side of the barrel. This gun features the very rare script "WC" mark just ahead of the buttplate tang. According to references, only one other gun is known with this marking. The precise meaning is unknown, however it is certainly a Confederate viewers mark. There is the stub of the original leather sling attached to the rear sling swivel. "WF" is lightly scratched into the trigger guard tang. CONDITION: Retains a dark heavy patina with moderate and rust overall. Has a nice, uncleaned crusty look to it. The markings in metal are clear. Only the "C" of the viewers marking is present due to dings in the area. Brass has a dark untouched patina. Ramrod is in matching condition. Wood is solid with dings and handling marks, with two cracks in the wrist area (however it is solid). Bore is rusty. Action is in good mechanical function. GR
