This early hand-carved Liberty pole was found in a Massachusetts barn and measures about 95" in length overall. The larger portion at the top, where the Liberty cap would have been placed, measures about 14-3/4". Farther down towards the base there is a section where it appears there were other bands or decorations, and there are three blacksmith forged nails still remaining. Accompanying the pole is an etching measuring 15-5/8" x 12-5/8"; the title is "Raising the Liberty Pole / A Sacred Symbol to the Sons of Liberty in Their Battle for American Rights". CONDITION: The pole is very dry and retains a dark, as found surface and patina. One side towards the portion at the top there is a large age crack as well as a series of small age cracks along the entire length of the pole. The entire pole shows hand carved tool marks and there is one chip missing towards the bottom. Some areas have a much darker crazed surface where it appears there may once have been paint. The pole certainly has great age. Framed etching on the left corner there is an area of insect damage and there are a few scuffs on the face, also some areas of staining and discoloration. This is a very interesting and historic artifact. DMG
