This classic steel headed Western tomahawk has a head measuring 9-1/2" including the bowl. The cutting edge measures about 3-5/8" and is slightly curved. The bowl measures about 1-3/4" in height and has four notches around the top edge on the right side. Both sides of the blade show stamped decoration as well as original engraved decorations including a large four point star on the right side and two pennants. The other side shows a large decorative heart and two pennants stemming from the rounded diamond shaped eye. There are also engraved borders on both sides of the eye and on both sides of the diamond shaped bowl mount. The original haft measures 23" in length. The top shows traces of the original leather gasket as well as three square nails to reinforce it. The haft is decorated with 134 brass tacks with about 10 broken off or missing. CONDITION: Very good overall. Blade retains a spotted grey patina showing proper age and some wear. Haft very good showing some marks from use, minor age cracks, and minor denting. A very good, authentic Western Plains tomahawk with a well-decorated blade. Probably circa 1870. DMG
