1/6 plate ambrotype, c. 1850, of an unidentified man posing with a Colt 1849 pocket model revolver and a rare Bell knife. The Bell knife, grasped in the sitter's left hand has an ivory handle, he holds the pistol by the butt in his right, his trigger finger with a cloth bandage. The image is contained in the lower half of its case measuring 3-1/4" X 3-3/4", the cover missing. Samuel Bell was born in Pennsylvania and later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, becoming known for his work as a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker. In 1851, Bell left Tennessee and settled in San Antonio, Texas. Included is a 12" X 36" sign showing the ambrotype and with a write-up about Samuel Bell.
