Seven sided octagonal barrel with 8th side as a ramrod channel, obviously having started life as a barrel for a different gun. Hooded bead on stem front sight, with adjustable orthoptic rear sight. Barrel marked "GUSS" on one flat, "STAHL" on another, and is signed on top flat "J.A. KUCHENREUTER. / REGENSBURG" in a silver inlay with flanking florals. Underside of barrel with R/U/G/ proofs, serial number, "H.S." stamp, "38 / 604", a stylized "K", 172.28 bore measurement. Face of action with serial number matching barrel. Typical slim schutzen forend with horn tip, retained by a single key, and lightly marked on the inside in pencil (?) 6786, matching barrel and action. Breech further engraved with florals. Action with well executed florals and scrolls. Detachable trigger unit. Stock with spliced in stippled thumbpiece with cleverly hidden splice line in stippling, checkering through wrist and a spliced in cheekpiece, terminating in a pronged buttplate. Singular sling swivel near toe. Accompanied by a pair of sight adjustment keys. CONDITION: Very good. Wood has been carefully refreshed and has a few minor repairs, and is now somewhat shy to metal. Metal is largely now a gunmetal grey with some flashes of bright steel and a few scattered areas of oxidation, most prominent under the forearm. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is excellent, bright and shiny with sharp lands and grooves. A very attractive Schutzen rifle retailed by one of the most respected names of the German gun industry. EW
