This musket has some Liege Pattern 1777 Short Land, or Second Model Brown Bess parts. These were produced for the British by the Belgians between 1778-1783. They were all made specifically for use in North America and saw extensive use here. Many examples such as this one have been restocked in America during their period of use. According to "The Brown Bess" by Erik Goldstein and Stewart Mobray, these muskets are scarce. The round tapered barrel is still its original full length with traces of intentionally removed proof marks on top near the breech. The tang was broken and repaired during the period of use, as it now terminates in a tombstone. The lock appears to be slightly later, as the markings are stamped rather than engraved. The tail is stamped "TOWER" and in the center there is a large crown over "GR". Below the pan has a stamped crown devoid of arrow denoting British ownership. Standard British Second Model brass furniture including a flat sideplate and ramrod ferrules with no Pratt improvement. The musket is restocked in cherry, and the wrist escutcheon from the original musket was not reused. An additional screw was added at the time of restocking to the front trigger guard tang. Complete with a replacement iron ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel was cleaned at one time and now retains a light grey patina with some darker spots and some corrosion towards the breech. Touch hole has been relined. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration. Cock is a probable replacement. Lock mechanism is strong and functions well. Markings are clear. Lock retains a grey patina with some scattered freckling. Brass is polished and shows scattered marks from use. Stock is very good with no restoration. There is some scattered cracks, minor chips, and marks from use. Trigger guard has a break through the rear trigger guard tang screw, but is completely intact and secure. An attractive American restocked musket. DMG
