Manufactured 1915. Shipped from Colt to London Armoury Company London England with a shipment of 300 guns. Chambered for the standard .45 ACP cartridge with blue finish and diamond pattern checkered walnut grips. Period engraved on mainspring housing "SIR DOUGLAS HAIG". As is well known Haig was the commander of British Expeditionary forces during the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Arras and the final 100 Days Offensive. He became known as the Butcher of Somme after the horrendous losses of nearly 2 million British troops under his command. Later it has been determined that his leadership was directly related to the capitulation of the German Army. The commercial production Colt 1911 serial number C18401 properly British proofed on barrel frame and slide. This gun is complete with a Colt Factory letter as well as a brief history of Haig provided by the consignor. This pistol is from a Canadian based collection and never before offered. CONDITION: Very good with over 90% of the factory commercial blue finish remaining. The grips are good with slight wear and rounding of checkering points. The bore is excellent, bright and shiny with sharp lands and grooves. Finish losses are typical front strap, back strap and consistent with period holster wear. All markings are crisp and legible and engraving is equally fine. Evidence of a trigger shoe having been used is on trigger. Magazine is a fine two tone with lanyard loop on base. TDW
