Manufactured 1861. Calisher & Terry Carbine .54 caliber bolt action carbine with 21" barrel. Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Lock is marked "CALISHER & TERRY LONDON" Barrel is marked "CALISHER & TERRY MAKERS TO H M WAR DEPARTMENT" markings over the breech are "TERRY'S PATENT 30 BORE". Serial numbered on wrist of trigger guard 8802. One piece smooth walnut stock with a single retaining band. Steel trigger guard and steel butt plate with trap for cleaning components. These unique bolt action carbines used a proprietary combustible paper cartridge. They were evaluated extensively by the British with very favorable findings and used in very small quantities. A number of Calisher & Terry carbines were sold in the United States during the Civil War conflict and the most famous one is associated to Jeb Stewart and was in his possession when he was killed at Yellow Tavern on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia and it is now housed in the Museum of the Confederacy in the capital of Virginia. CONDITION: Very good with over 80% of the blue finish remaining on barrel, trigger guard, and buttplate. The bore is exceptionally fine with bright lands and grooves. The action operates properly. The wood stock is very good with several small bruises and abrasions but very good overall. The Calisher & Terry is a unique collectible as they encompass both British small arms collectors as well as American Civil War collectors. TDW
