Extremely scarce and desirable original Tredegar 10 pounder parrot cannon tube on a faithful reproduction carriage manufactured by Charlie Steen in 2018. Carriage bears manufacturer’s data plaque affixed to right front side. Trunnion on right side has discernible “CO” and consignor states that prior to repaint one could clearly discern “T. F” (Tredegar Foundry), and “J.R. ANDERSON CO”. Consignor states that prior to repaint one could discern “1734” on the left trunnion. Muzzle has discernible “7” at top front of muzzle and consignor states prior to repaint one could discern “1734”. No front sight present in vacant socket at top of muzzle. This gun came in with rubber pieces attached to the tires to preserve condition of the paint and these are included, although removed for photography. Only 80 of Parrot cannons of this kind were produced at Tredegar during the Civil War, and few survive today, with only a very small number available to private collectors. This particular gun tube was rescued by the current consignor's father from a scrap metal facility decades ago, and it was only relatively recently that the project to mount it to an appropriate carriage was completed. Length from muzzle to end on trail 140”. Width out hub to outer hub 78”. Height of wheels 57”. Weight including carriage is approximately 1800 pounds. This can be readily moved by an average man when this gun is on a concrete floor. CONDITION: Tube exhibits moderate pitting under new coat of black enamel applied incidental to mounting on carriage in 2018. Markings detectable and only partially legible, but are positively present. Bore shows heavier pitting on right side with much less on left, still in good condition all things considered. Near mint attractive dark olive green paint on wooden furnishings with near excellent black enamel paint on metal furnishing on carriage. Steel tires have some chips away from the black enamel revealing bare metal. JWK 2020-05-084
