French Chassepot bolt action single shot rifle. Made 1872. Left side of the receiver is marked "St. Etinne MLE 1866" Inspctors marks "J.H", "B" and "J" respectively on the left side of the barrel. Matching serials on the barrel, bolt, bayonet mount, and stock. Interesting note, all screws are marked "39" not "29" as the should be. French acceptance mark on the right side of the stock reads "SEPTIMBRE 1872" in a circle. Behind the trigger guard on the wrist bears a marking "BOURRIN.C". Original blade front sight and ladder rear. Rear sight has been bent, but does still slide. Wood stock with correct metal butt plate. CONDITION: Metal has been heavily cleaned and polished. Stock is fair, with original finish, with numerous dings, scratches and handling marks. Shiny bore with crisp rifling. Mechanically excellent. JWA
