Classic form of the musket used by Japan after 1543 when the acquired the technology from Portuguese traders. Onion cannon muzzle with pierced integral rear sight. Top of octagonal barrel is inlaid with gold, silver, and copper dragons amongst clouds. Simple line design of a classic Japanese helmet at breech. Stock reinforcement pins with chrysanthemum motifs, one missing on right side. Brass furniture otherwise plain, with mainspring featuring a singular pierced floral piece. Stock otherwise decorated with brass inlays of birds, dragons, clouds, and other designs. CONDITION: Very good considering the age of the piece. One of the brass reinforcement inlays in the stock is missing and the brass inlay along the spine is missing some brass near heel. Inlays on barrel visible with some extremely minor losses that do not detract. Barrel with with some age related patina. Matchlock works appropriately, bore is good with even oxidation throughout. Stock with three cracks that appear stable and one piece missing on left side along other scattered handling marks. A nice example of a classic Japanese firearm. EW
