Lot consists of: (A) Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor single shot rifle. Made 1881 with an "1878" lock, this is of course is how the "8" was stamped, meaning it really is "3". Interestingly, this rifle was built on an 1863 Springfield lock plate. Round steel barrel with front blade sight and original ramped tangent rear. Blued finish on the barrel and frame, looking to have been redone at some point in time. Hardwood stock with no cartouche and a rack number of "35" behind the bottom tang. Steel butt plate with typical "US" marking on the top. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its finish with mild wear and handling marks. Stock is very good with mild wear and handling marks. Bore is shiny with sharp rifling left. Mechanically excellent. (B) Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor single shot rifle. Made 1879 with a standard round steel barrel. Front blade sight and original ramped tangent rear. Rear sight is bent and unable to slide. Blued finish on the barrel, frame and lock plate. Metal was refinished at some point. Hardwood stock with no cartouche. Stock was refinished at some point with a large crack being filled in. Steel butt plate with typical "US" marking on the top. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its finish with light wear and handling marks. Stock is very good with mild wear and handing marks. Bore is shiny with crisp rifling left. Mechanically fine. JWA
