Original Civil War naval officer's cutlass. Usually designated the 1860 pattern, but introduced in 1861. Same configuration as the enlisted form, but with impressed shell contours on the cup guard and cut-out letters "U.S.N." Knurled edge to the pommel cap. Thinner officer's quality twisted wire, only a small portion of which remains. Leather grip present, but showing wear. Portions of the original gilt finish remain in recesses of the exterior. The inner surfaces of guard retain about 40%. Blade with visible 1862 date at obverse ricasso. Slightly rubbed Ames stamp on reverse. Blade has good edge and point. Bright metal with scattered light graying. Blade pad in place. Scabbard is enlisted variant with stud on brass band and brass drag, but riveted seam. Old cloth tape repair at upper edge of drag. Scattered crackling and finish loss to leather surface of scabbard, which is an enlisted variant. One slight, thin tear, 3/4" long, along upper obverse edge just below stud mounting band. One small hole about 2" below that on lower edge. CONDITION: Good to very good. SR
