Joseph Wilbraham is recorded as working at 280 Strand between 1850 and 1854. Half round half octagon with intercepting 12 sides and beaded band separator Damascus shotgun barrel engraved across top flat "Joseph Wilbraham 280 Strand London". Bead front sight. Hooked patent breech with platinum blowout. Ramrod, possibly the original, retained by two ferrules. View and proof marks, truing strike, "A.R." and two dots on bottom of patent breech, shell motif on top of breech. Full octagon Damascus rifle barrel with "Joseph Wilbraham 280 Strand London" interrupted by dovetailed rear sight. Bead front sight, rear sight with one standing leaf and three folding leaves. Sling eye of rear ramrod ferrule. Rifle ramrod likely a replacement. Hooked patent breech with platinum blowout. Bottom of barrel marked with view and proof marks, "A.R", truing strike, and singular dot. Front action lock with stock retained by a single key. Ivory nosecap, likely replaced. Neat grip safety that extends from trigger guard forming a vaguely Germanic looking guard. Lock, upper tang, lower tang, grip safety, and pineapple finial engraved with scroll. European walnut stock with vacant silver thumbpiece, point pattern checkering through wrist. Right side of stock with nicely inletted patchbox engraved with more scroll and central floral. Buttplate with engraving across top, border engraving around butt. Accompanied by a split ring top wooden case with bronze plaque reading "W.D.L.". Case lined in green baize with Wilbraham Late Child label in lid, and includes both lead balls and wads. CONDITION: Fine as refinished. Barrels both well rebrowned over some very minor marks in metal. Lockplate and trigger guard recolored. Tangs and finial silvering, grip safety turning plum. Buttplate dove grey. Stock very good, gently cleaned at one point with wood now slightly shy to metal and softening of sharp edges. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bore of rifle barrel is very good with well defined rifling and scattered darkness. Shotgun barrel also very good with minimum pitting. Case excellent, revarnished exterior over some cracks and age related bruises. Lining very good with some minor areas of rubbing. A neat combination gun. EW
