Built circa 1824. Barrels with diminutive front sight, concave game rib reading "I. PURDEY, PRINCES STREET. LEICESTER SQUARE LONDON." Barrels with attractive Damascus browning, and marked on underside with serial number, view and proof for blackpowder, CL (indicating the barrels were sourced from Charles Lancaster), and a barrel truing strike. Nipples are indicated "L" and "R". Platinum blowout plugs, hooked patent breeches. Ramrod possibly the original. Stock retained by a single key. Long tang trigger guard engraved with a stand of arms and with a pineapple finial. Case colored lock with push on safeties, engraved with stand of arms at rear, rays, florals, and "PURDEY". Dolphin form hammers, both with damage to the left side of recoil shield, engraved and checkered. Double triggers, fore trigger checkered. Grip checkered in point pattern at wrist but running entirely down to buttcap, which is engraved with rays. Trigger guard, tang, and buttcap with highly attractive English blue. Vacant silver thumbpiece. Cased in an attractive split ring top case with green baize lining and accessories comprising a bullet mold with sprue cutter, cap tin, Dixon and Sons bag flask, and loading tool. Case is maker marked on hinge "I. BRAMAH" for Joseph Bramah, who worked at 124 Picadilly. As Bramah died in 1814 and the name of his company changed to Bramah & Son, the case is likely a later addition. CONDITION: Very fine with a few extremely minor marks. Barrels are excellent, and potentially factory refreshed, with a heavy application of lacquer. Locks and hammers are excellent with strong evidence of color; hammers with aforementioned damage to shields. Bluing on tang, trigger guard, and buttcap is excellent, with some losses to tang where pistol would have been gripped. Wood is excellent, with phenomenal wood to metal fit. There are a few very minor markings to wood and one 1" strike on right side near to of checkering. Checkering is excellent with a few extremely minor areas of abrasion. Actions work appropriately when cycled by hand, bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Case is good, with a tear in lining of top lid, one compartment bare of any lining, and some other scattered abrasions. Bullet mold fair with extensive abrasion and silvering, probably from cleaning. Cap tin essentially plumb with some scrapes and high edge wear. Flask very good with no dents and copious amounts of fire bluing on spring. Rammer very good, with evidence of use. An extremely attractive Purdey Howdah pistol. EW
