Built circa 1802. Octagonal barrel with Damascus browning, bead front sight. Serial number and truing mark on underside of barrel and breech. Platinum touch hole, single line of gold band decoration. Deeply struck hallmark for "JOSEPH MANTON PATENT". Hooked patent breech. Breech and hook in the white. Dovetailed rear sight, tang with stand of arms and florals. Roller bearing frizzen, waterproof pan, English push on safety. Filed cock with line and floral engraving. Lock with stand of arms, rays, and floral border engraving, engraved "JOSEPH MANTON / LONDON". Frizzen with border engraving and "JOSEPH MANTON" on one side, "PATENT" on other, tip with "880". Stock retained by single key, horn tip, evidence of repair on interior to left side of barrel channel. Horn tipped ramrod possibly the original. Long tang with attractive English blue. Trigger guard with border engraving and pineapple finial extension. Finial and trigger guard have been cleaned to an in-the-white appearance. Blue still visible on interior of trigger guard and protected area of finial. Grip checkered in point pattern and going all the way down to blued buttcap, which has another stand of arms. Silver thumbpiece with heavily worn initials, may be "H.C.". Accompanied by a mahogany case with accessories comprising a two piece loading rod and mallet with bare screw tip, compartment with patches and flint, unmarked oil bottle, and combination ball/powder flask with red Moroccan leather covering and marked on ball cover for J. Dixon and Sons. Paper label for Manton at the 11 Hanover Street address in lid with handwritten "Joseph Manton died / June 29. 1835 / 6 Kensal Green / No 189.". CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retaining virtually all of an old rebrown with silvering to sharp edges. Wood very good with some bumps and bruises and had finish added. Two slivers are missing from forearm. Checkering with some areas of abrasion and softness. Blued tang and buttcap with much bluing left mixing with some brown. Finial screw molested. Case is very good as habilitated with some extra finish added. Case relined in blue. Loading tool is very good with some bruising from use. Oil bottle tarnished but good. Powder/ball flask very good with some oxidation. Label with stains and foxing, and a few tears. A very attractive cased Manton. CF: Lot 1226, James D. Julia Fall 2009. EW
