J.G. Dachtine is recorded as working at Aix la Chapelle (the French name for the town of Aachen) circa 1750. Swamped octagonal barrel with seven groove rifling, silver bead front sight with two leaf dovetailed rear sight. Hallmarked at breech with initials "JGD" (?), difficult to discern, and the hallmark of Aachen. Gold touch hole. Lock with "I G DACHTINE AAIX " underneath pan and La Chapelle under frizzen spring. Clever safety plate behind hammer. Tang engraved with florals, wood carved with florals. Ramrod, possibly the original, retained by two silver ferrules. Full length stock with silver nosecap decorated with floral and line engraving. Germanic flowing trigger guard with inlaid silver scroll engraved finials, tang engraved with scroll. Double set triggers. Modern sling eye and loop at rear, original sling loop near fore ferrule. Toe compartment with engraved German silver cover with spare jaw screw; piece itself is a well executed later creation. Silver buttplate with scroll and floral work, heel with stand of arms. Diminutive shadowline cheekpiece. Most interesting is silver inlay at the wrist, depicting the crest of the House of Schoeborn, depicting a two headed eagle with orb and sword, triple shield, triple crowns, a deer, triple diamonds, a central lion with two tails, and a scene with crosses and a shield. Crest is topped by a crown, flanking lions, standing on a bed of florals. CONDITION: Good. Metal parts essentially now smooth silver with some minor areas of darkness. Silver toned, engraving still quite nice. Stock is good with some bumps and bruises from age, and a few extremely minor chips and reinforcements. Bore is excellent, bright on lands with some scattered darkness in grooves throughout. Lock will hold on half cock, but not full. Set triggers operate correctly. Sling is contemporary. EW
