Springfield manufactured Remington Rolling Block Model 1871 single shot rifle with 36" round barrel, military two position volley sight, blade front sight, and chambered in .50-70 Government. Tang is marked "REMINGTONS PATENT PAT. MAY 3D NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1868" with and eagle over "U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1872" on right of receiver and "MODEL 1871" on left. Plain, straight grain walnut stock with "ESA" cartouche denoting inspection by Erskine S. Allen. Buttplate stamped "US" on top tang with a "6" in comb of stock toward heel. CONDITION: Very good to excellent with metal parts turned to a pleasing chocolate patina. Heavy freckling to breech face. Stocks are good to very good with numerous dents, dings, and gouges from use but no discernible cracks. Buttplate has some russetting and freckling from storage. Action works correctly and locks tightly. Bore is dark with russetting and freckling but with good rifling. -TN-
