Made in 1883, and featuring 28" Damascus barrels that have smooth concave rib with small brass front bead and usual rib legend. Made on a #2 frame with unstruck barrel weight of 4 lbs 6 oz. Splinter forend is checkered in early B Grade pattern with engraved Deeley release and engraved steel tip. Made with straight top lever. Gold shield behind top tang. The sidelock action is engraved with near full coverage on lock plates with dogs in hunting scenes and scroll. The fences are sculpted. Bottom of action with two dogs in large circle surrounded by floral and scroll engraving. Trigger guard with floral scroll at bow and serial number at tang. Made with double triggers and extractors. The capped pistol grip buttstock with tear drop behind action is nicely checkered through the wrist and has a very fine shell carving near the grip cap which is a rare and desirable feature on these early hammer guns. The butt terminates with a lightly engraved skeleton buttplate. CONDITION: Very good as partially restored. Barrels retain more than 95% restored Damascus pattern. Action has toned mostly gray with engraving at front of frame thinned from handling, lock plate engraving is quite nice. Right hammer is a replacement and should be replaced with a proper hammer. Trigger guard retains most of its restored blue finish. Buttstock is excellent as fully restored. Skeleton buttplate has been polished bright, engraving thinned. Bores with frosting throughout and a couple of pits in right tube that are more noticeable. Mechanics are fine. A rare early hammer gun with surprisingly good dimensions and could be used with RST shells! JSL
