This embroidered star on blue silk was cut from a Civil War battleflag and mounted on an album page that was later individually mounted in this oval frame. On the bottom edge of the album page in old ink is written, "Star from flag during the battle on the field at Gettysburg Pennsylvania from C.W. Yancy of New York." This is from the collection of Charles "Hap" Hazard and comes with an 1989 letter detailing its purchase, noting the only alteration is cleaning of the glass and replacement of old nails. Hazard added his own note to the reverse of the mount "This Star was cut from a regimental Battle Flag carried in the War of the Rebellion-1861-1865-/ It is glued to an old sc[r]ap book page, later removed from the book. The star is of the type used at that time by the tiffany Co. of New York and the Canfield Bros. Co. in Baltimore, both of whom made flags and other military items. Charles Yancey, listed on the front of this card, enlisted into Co. I, 82nd Ohio Infantry 12/26/61 and was present with the unit at Gettysburg. Heavily engaged on July 1st the 82nd was forced to withdraw to Cemetery Hill." Hazard refers above to the use of embroidered rather than painted stars on regimental flags from Tiffany and Canfield Brothers. In the accompanying letter he notes that the only C. Yancy (or Yancey) with Gettysburg service was Charles Yancy of the 82nd Ohio, though he was unsure of his exact relationship to "C.W. Yancy of New York" The 82nd Ohio saw action at Cross Keys and Cedar Mountain, and then at Groveton, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. At the latter engagement, as part of the 1th Corps, they fought on the first day's field in support of Dilger's Battery near the Carlisle Road, losing 181 officers and men out of 258 engaged. They also had substantial service in the western theatre from Fall 1864 to the end of the war. This is a very nicely preserved and presented Gettysburg relic from a respected collection. SR
