These 2 collided bullets came from the area of the Antietam battlefield known as Bloody Lane, where Union regiments of the Second Army Corps fought a brutal engagement against Confederates sheltered in a sunken road along the Confederate center. Repeated assaults finally took the position, but further progress in the sector stalled after the wounding of General Richardson. This scarce example of 2 bullets that met in mid-air is from the Charles "Hap" Hazard collection and comes with a note recording its purchase in 1987 with a recorded provenance of recovery at Bloody Lane. It is worth noting that some of that area remained in private hands until very recent years. Examples of collided bullets are rare, but were valued by veterans and pictured in some regimental histories or collected reminiscences as evidence of the intensity of gunfire on some Civil War battlefields. This is a good example from a well-known and respected collection. SR
