Rifle-size cartridge box with single-piece 5-compartment magazine tin. Inner flap has an ink handwritten label reading, "Southern Pouch / Sharpsburg MD / Sept. 1862," referring to the Battle of Antietam, fought between McClellan and Lee, and known as the single bloodiest day of the war. The battle ended in a stalemate, but Lee's decision to pull back into Virginia handed the needed victory to McClellan. The pouch is a style usually associated with militia and bears a leather facing of higher quality with a stamped brass oval circle on the front, within which are separately mounted letters "F.L.I." CONDITION: Good. The magazine tin lacks one divider. Side ears of the inner flap are partially detached. The box was made without an implement pouch. The base of the latch tab is present. The end is missing. The outer facing leather of the box has cracks and is missing significant portions, exposing the underlaying, less fancy, but sturdier leather. There is a small piece of leather on the front that appears to be attached but is actually separated and sits in place behind a crack in the leather. The left end of shoulder belt retaining strap on the reverse is present. The rest is missing. The shoulder belt was likely linen and sewn in place at the bottom rear of the box where stitching holes are evident, but no evidence of buckles for a heavier sling. Leather tabs for the plate and unit letters are in place. SR
