1864 vintage Henry Rifle serial number 4527. Silver plated receiver and buttplate. Letter "S" observed above serial number on inside of lower tang denoting factory silver plating. Engraved in typical Samuel J. Hoggson style featuring foliate scrolls with punch dot backgrounds located on receiver and buttplate. Large flower blossom engraved on both sides of receiver. Bird dog on point engraved on left side. A very similar engraving pattern can be seen on page 176 of Les Quick's book "THE HENRY RIFLE". Case hardened lever and hammer. Select grain walnut buttstock. First model rounded buttplate with trapdoor for cleaning rod. Loading lever with spur and lever latch located on lower tang. Large style magazine cartridge follower with milled flats on receiver slot. Assembly numbers observed on buttstock screws, and on end of barrel behind the loading gate. Serial numbers observed on top barrel flat, inside buttplate, inside lower tang, and inside upper tang slot of the stock. Late style, square back, German silver front sight. Late style ladder rear barrel sight graduated to 900 yards with small "V" notch sliding bar. No provisions for sling. CONDITION: Excellent overall. Barrel is refinished to a "plum brown" patina. 75-80% original silver plating on receiver and buttplate. Two holes are drilled into the top receiver flat. The buttplate tang screw is a replacement and set at an angle as there is a broken screw directly under the hole in the wood. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is excellent with modest abrasion. Stock is refinished. Overall a very attractive Henry rifle. -MKS-
