Carte de visite of "Colonel" Edward Zane Carroll Judson (1821-1886) by Napoleon Sarony, New York. 2-1/2" x 4". Facsimile signature of Judson is under the image. In 1844, Judson assumed the pen name "Ned Buntline". He was a most colorful character. He pursued a career as a writer trying unsuccessful to start several magazines, he wrote several books and sensational stories for the newspapers. In 1869 he met and became friends with Bill Cody. He claimed to have created the nickname "Buffalo Bill". At the height of his career his sales surpassed that of Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. According to numerous western authors and legend, Buntline commissioned the production of five Colt "Buntline Specials." They were described as extra-long Colt Single Action Army revolvers with a 12-inch barrel. Buntline presented them to five lawmen, including Wyatt Earp, in thanks for their help in contributing local color to his western yarns. Very good. Corners are slightly rounded. CG
