A vintage and elegant double hammer blackpowder rifle. The barrels have an elevated front sight bead with loop for sling, one standing sight, and a slightly raised flat top rib with cross hatched checkering and dolls head extension. Barrel rib reads "C.BARTETS & SOHN, KONIGL:HOFBUCHSENMACHE IN WIESERDEN & ZELLA." The action is built with beautiful blued engraved gold inlay low profile rebounding hammers. Top lever is also blued with gold inlay and engraved. Action bottom and lock plates are of a silver gray patina with gold inlay and handsome, fine foliate scroll. Action also with double triggers housed in a beautiful horn trigger guard. Dark smoky walnut stock with cheekpiece, finely checkered pommel grip, long top strap, loop for sling, shield for initials and fancy steel engraved butt plate with trap door for holding extra cartridges. Forearm with Deeley release and stronger checkering. Weight: 6 Lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: Good. Barrels retain 95% blue patina with freckling in various areas. Action good with few signs of early use. Stock fair with indications of refurbishment. Forend good with slight signs of use. Beautiful vintage double rifle. PROVENANCE: Bartels & Sohn was the official gunsmith for the family of Hesse during the 19th century, and this gun is identified by serial number as having been manufactured in 1878 for Prince Alexander Ludwig Georg Friedrich Emil.
