Generally considered to be the world's first GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun), the MG-34 was designed to provide the German military with a portable machine gun that could support infantry either in a light or medium machine gun role, be utilized in an anti-aircraft role, and even be used in static defenses such as bunkers. It was issued into service in 1936 and was manufactured until the end of the Second World War, even with Germany's plan to replace it with the more inexpensive and easier to produce MG-42. This MG-34 comprises of authentic parts placed on an aluminum dummy receiver. The receiver is marked "S/243/ 1938/ 4278" indicating manufacture by Mauser Borsigwalde. Barrel is marked "dlv/ 8 / cyq 42". Top cover is milled. All matching numbers on this example are force matched. Metal components have been refinished. Bolt can remain fixed in placed, and will fall out if cocked, but can be easily put back into place. Aluminum grips are reproduction. Complete with period bipod. CONDITION: Metal components retain the majority of their reapplied finish, with areas of wear, nicks, and scratches scattered all around. Top cover has a small area that was refinished in cold blue. Barrel is in excellent condition, and retains a bright bore with strong rifling throughout. Wood stock is good, being refinished and showing losses all around. Overall, a very nice and early MG-34 display machine gun, that would make for a nice display piece or parts kit. MLW
