Ubu nakago with signature on both sides of nakago. Heavy tsuba pierced with hearts at corners and constructed out of brass. 25" cutting edge with choji hamon. Dragon menuki with traces of gilding, rayskin wrap, woven green tsuka-ito. Housed in an old Saya that has significant areas red lacquer that was further decorated in gold, and would have been an impressive sight when new. Saya-ito of the same style as the tsuka-ito, and likely done by the same hand. Sageo done by a different hand but appears period, with two hangers decorated in florals. There is a design hidden underneath the sageo and saya-ito, but given the fragility of the remaining lacquer, we have elected not to remove them to examine; appears to be a turquoise cloth covering with golden floral patterns. CONDITION: Fair. Blade has old age related staining throughout and was cleaned over old oxidation at one point, but has minimal openings. Cutting edge with a few nicks, one towards center of blade and a few microchips at kissaki. Mounts are very good with some old age related staining. Saya is very good with several areas where decorated lacquer has lifted; sageo and saya-ito are good, complete. Turquoise cloth design with one tear at left side, bottom. A blade with good architecture and interesting mounts. EW
