Manufactured without sights and with offset American "P" and "V" proofs in ovals. Beavertail relief carving at tang. Lock signed "Ketland / & Co" in center of lock. Pierced sideplate. Ramrod, possibly the original, retained by a reinforced brass ferrule. Brass buttcap, trigger guard, and escutcheon at wrist. Stocked in America with a Ketland lock, with the prevailing accepted theory being that Coutty's shop was adjacent to Ketland and he bought parts from them to assemble pistols. CONDITION: Good. Metal has been cleaned over some old oxidation with a few deeper areas. Proofs and Ketland signature softened, but legible. Wood is very good with normal marks from handling and operation, and a likely period repair at wrist of two splits; appears to be the original wood. Crack through sideplate screw that runs to breech. One pressure mark at the front base of the grip. Brass has acquired a pleasing mustard patina; reinforced ramrod mouth is loose, two cracks at ramrod ferrule and buttcap. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bore is very good with even oxidation throughout. EW
