Alexander Vion was a 19th century artist that lived and worked in New York. Signed: "Painted for a friend, F. Agnus; a portrait of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth of the New York Fire Zouaves and the first Union casualty in the Civil War. A son ami F. Agnus". Heavy inpainting on background, moderate inpainting on face and shoulder. Relined, original stretcher.
