Brown was a member of the Scalp Level School of southwestern Pennsylvania, a school of landscape painting inspired by the later Hudson River School painters. Scalp Level is located in the Alleghenies a few miles from Johnstown, PA. The area provided all the landscape elements these painters sought: rugged nature populated by streams, waterfalls, forests, rocks, wild flowers and wild creatures. The Scalp Level painters were headed by artist George Hetzel (1826-1899) who first discovered the sight when he was an instructor at the Pittsburgh School of Design for Women and encouraged his colleagues and students to make Scalp Level their summer retreat. A lovely view of an artist with a painting table and supplies. Flaking at bottom, minor flakes at very top. 1" x 1/2" tear and repair in sky.
