Albert Reiger was an Austrian artist best known for his dark, muted landscapes of Vienna and historical scenes. This painting depicts a scene on the Nile River with a pyramid in the background. He painted landscapes in great detail with attention given to the effects of light, using oscillating brush marks and contrasting moments of shadow to animate his subjects. Born in 1834 to renowned Italian painter Guiseppe Rieger, the younger Rieger resided in Vienna from 1838 onward. He was awarded honorary membership in the Vienna Academy of the Arts and received the Grand Gold Austrian Swedish-Norwegian medal. Reiger died in 1905. Minor punctures. Small areas of flaking.
