Orlando Schubert was a Cleveland artist, especially known for his marine paintings. As a young man he worked on boats in the Great Lakes. By 1873 he had returned to Cleveland and painted a well-regarded watercolor of Cleveland's lakefront. He joined the group of local artists in the old City Hall known as the "Old Bohemians" and was a charter member of the Brush and Palette Club. Schubert then left Cleveland to study and paint in Munich for 4 years. Upon his return he ran a print shop in Cleveland to support his painting. Upon his retirement he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. Sherman's Bummers was a name given to those soldiers under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman during his southern campaign in 1864. Sherman's "scorched earth" policy destroyed everything that was appropriated and burned thousands of acres in their path. CONDITION: Several areas of restoration and inpainting.
