Derek Clarke studied at the Slade School of Art. He lived in the west of Ireland both before and after the Second World War. Clarke also taught at Edinburgh College of Art between 1947 and 1978, supplementing his income by painting portraits. This sign, dated 1968 is for the Ind Coope brewery, in operation from 1799. The brewery became part of Allied Breweries in 1961.
