Depicting a British soldier, circa 1750 from a Grenadier Company playing cards and smoking a pipe. James Brade Sword was born in Philadelphia and after a brief career in engineering entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1861. In 1863, he studied with George W. Nicholson, a landscape painter. He was a popular painter of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and genre.
