William Allen Wall (American, 1801-1885). Oil on canvas. Trained as a clock and watchmaker, William Allen Wall (1801-1885), found success painting portraits in the prosperous whaling town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He became especially known for his paintings of early New Bedford scenes. Wall met Thomas Sully in New Bedford and spent several months in 1830 working at Sully's studio. It was also in this year that Wall traveled to Europe and met and traveled with Ralph Waldo Emerson. While Wall continued his lucrative portrait painting he also painted literary and historical subjects as well as landscapes. Relined.
