Julian Scott served as a Union Army drummer during the Civil war where he received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Lee's Mills. Julian Scott was injured early in the Civil War and took up painting and began studying at the National Academy of Design. Scott returned to the war in the spring of 1864, but this time solely as an artist. He was named an honorary aide-de-camp to Gen. William F. Smith in Gen. Benjamin Butler's "Army of the James" near Richmond. After the War, he continued to paint battlefield scenes and other paintings of a military nature. The sitter, George Hamilton Perkins (1836 – 1899) from New Hampshire was an officer in the United States Navy during the American Civil War whose conduct during the August 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay was a major factor in the capture of the Confederate ironclad Tennessee. Following the War, he continued in active duty and in 1896 received a Congressionally authorized promotion to the retired rank of commodore in recognition of his gallantry and skill during the Battle of Mobile Bay three decades earlier. George Perkins is shown standing with his elbow leaning on his sword holding papers in his pocket. Small repair and inpainting to the upper left background.
