U.S. Grant is shown as a leader in battle with sword held high sitting astride a powerful white horse. Smoke-filled battlefield with the American flag flying in the background. Although primarily known as a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Christian Schussele was also a painter of portraits and history and genre paintings. He served as a professor of drawing and painting at the Academy, emphasizing the figure, from 1868 until 1879, when he died. Schussele was born in 1824 in Alsace Lorraine. Before arriving in Philadelphia in 1848, he had been educated in art in Strasbourg and Paris. While he began his career with wood engraving and lithography, Schussele was able to become a full-time painter in 1854. John Sartain, father of painter William Sartain, made a popular print of a Schussele painting, freeing him financially. He was an academic classicist who painted history paintings as well as many portraits of well-known Americans. Relined, but original stretcher. Minor inpainting to sky.
