Signed "Fort du Homet Cheri François-Marguerite Dubreuil" (1828 - 1880) Chéri François Dubreuil was born in Vic en Bigorre in the Pyrenees, and joined the French Navy in the 1840's. He became Master helmsman in 1854. His marine paintings are held in several museums including the Naval Museum, which has five of his paintings in their collection. A finely detailed and dramatic painting of the Battle of Cherbourg, or the Sinking of CSS Alabama. This was a single-ship action fought during the Civil War between a United States Navy warship, USS Kearsarge, and a Confederate States Navy warship, CSS Alabama, on June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. The Alabama was a commerce raiding ship entering the port of Cherbourg for repairs. After two years, the Kearsarge finally caught up with Alabama as she was receiving repairs and blockaded the Alabama in Cherbourg. On June 19, CSS Alabama, with nowhere else to go, ran up the Stars and Bars and exited the harbor to attack Kearsarge. After an hour of heavy artillery fire, the Alabama began to sink. Relined. Large areas of inpainting in sky. Inpainting on right side of American ship. 1" x 3" tear and repair to bow of Confederate ship.
