Printed 38 star handsewn ensign. Stamped on hoist "PATENTED APR. 20th, 1870/AMERICAN ENSIGN/ 20-FT" and inscribed in ink on hoist "S.A. GRANT/AUG.31.1889". In the 19th century, Navy ensigns became quite large as in this example, measuring 9' 6" by 20'. Metal grommets. CONDITION: staining, wear and small losses throughout. KK
