Based on sketches by the Civil War artist James Earl Taylor. This important painting depicts a group of three Union soldiers, Captain Robert Dimmick, Captain Thomas Mosscrop and Corporal Edward Dubey of the Tenth Regiment N.Y. Volunteers lying wounded on the bank of a stream. Around them are the dead and dying from the Second Battle of Manassas. A Confederate, Captain Hugh Barr, recognized a Masonic emblem on the shirt of Captain Mosscrop. Barr immediately came to the assistance of the three Union soldiers and procured the surgeon to remove the bullets from his Masonic brothers and dress their wounds. The next day Barr appeared with an ambulance and removed the soldiers to the hospital. The story of these soldiers was recounted in The Battle Field Story of the Blue and the Gray by Colonel William Edgar Rogers. The painting was described by The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sunday December 20, 1896. It was hanging on the wall of the Register of King's County, Granville W. Harmon. An elaborate set of resolutions were published by the Masons in 1882 honoring the services of Captain Barr. Relined, scattered minor inpainting, craquelure.
