Of wrought iron with a leaf blade with an approximately 69" shaft that flared to accept an octagonal faceted wooden pole. Wooden covering made of 2 pieces and tied at the base. These were used once a barbed harpoon had captured a whale to dispatch the animal quickly by severing arteries, but by the end of the 19th century were largely replaced by firearms. CONDITION: Very good with an attractive chocolate patina throughout. 5" split at opening that accepts faceted pole. Wood blade covering is very good with some age related staining and roughness. Shaft with some bumps and bruises but commensurate with covering. A neat example of nautical history. EW
Item Dimensions: 94" x 3" x 3".
