The brass plaque measures 13-1/2" x 12" and is engraved with a large depiction of the British ship, the Monarch. The brass plate is about 1-1/6" thick. The inscription reads "To the Honble Sir Edw.d Hanke Knt. of the Bath, Vice Admiral of the Blue Squadron of this Majesty's Fleets. This Plate is most humbly Dedicated, being the Exact View, of this Majesty's Ship MONARQUE, of 74 guns, one of the Six French Men of the War, taken the 14th Octob 174, by the British Fleet, under his command. By his most Obedient & most Devoted, humble Servant - R Short". During the French and Indian War, Admiral Byng was charged with failing to do his utmost and was executed onboard the Monarch on March 14th, 1757. He was executed by firing squad. The plaque is mounted on a board measuring 28-1/2" x 12-1/8" x 1/2". CONDITION: Brass retains a dark patina. It appears that black ink lies in all of the engraved areas, unfortunately at some time, some one used this plate for target practice and there are about 20 dents from a pellet rifle coming from the opposite side, and one being fired from the front. The board retains an old, dry surface and the opposite side shows some traces of early paint. A very interesting and attractive plate. DMG

Item Dimensions: 13 - 1/2" x 12".
