Marlin Model 1881 with 22" smoothbore octagon barrel with full length magazine tube. Breech of barrel is marked "V. Kindler/ E. Saginaw." Chambered in .45-70 Government with standard sights. There is evidence where the original serial number was ground off and replaced with the number "11" (likely by V. Kindler). Barrel probably started out at 28", was cut-down and bored out to .460 smoothbore for shot shell use (possibly for ornithology work). Plain, straight grain walnut stock and forearm with smooth steel buttplate. CONDITION: Very good, with an overall brown patina finish. Wood has been sanded and refinished with areas of repair around the top tang. Forearm has a longitudinal crack with a section of replaced wood. Bore is excellent with modest abrasions. Action is tight. -MKS-
