1871 manufactured Dutch 1870/87 Rolling Block Carbine made by Nagant in Liege, Belgium under Remington's Patent for the Dutch Marechaussee (an elite corps of mounted police.) Correct, 21" round barrel retained by single distinctive barrel band with "bayonet-catch" for side folding bayonet. Model 87 rear carbine sight with blade front. Converted to 11mm Beaumont from 11.3mm Dutch-Remington in 1872 by the armory and is marked as such on the buttplate tang. Marked "Brevet Remington" with Nagant royalty number on left side of receiver along with Nagant's maker's mark. Matching serial numbers on hammer, breechblock, trigger guard and right side or receiver. Interesting "88" marking on buttplate tang and right side of barrel. Left of barrel is marked "1871" denoting year of manufacture as well as Dutch and Belgian proofmarks on barrel and small parts. Plain walnut stock with acceptance cartouche with a Crown over a "W" denoting acceptance by the government of William III. CONDITION: Good with metal parts faded to a freckled silver patina overall. Corrosion on barrel, barrel band, and action from improper storage. Wood is very good as sanded and refinished. Numerous dents and dings from the strain of time throughout and major repairs at right of wrist at lower tang and right side of forearm at barrel band. Action works correctly and locks tightly with wear at sear where hammer meets trigger. Bore is bright and shiny with modest abrasion and crisp rifling. -TN-
