Thaddaus (Also referenced as Thaddeus) Poltz is recorded as working in Karlovy Vary, a town in western Bohemia, between 1763-1788. Two stage barrel with double wedding bands at the girdle. Octagonal stage with delicate flowing gold inlay. Small brass front sight, barrel tang signed "2", denoting that this pistol was manufactured as a pair. Flintlock with beveled edges and decorated with a stand of arms at rear, and a warrior resting on drums with a spear in his hand. Signed "T. Poltz" just under the pan and between the legs of the frizzen. Frizzen filed and attractive scalloped. Pan cover decorated with lines and florals. Replaced swan neck cock decorated with florals. Ramrod, retained by reinforced brass ferrules, with entry ferrule relief engraved with florals. Wood relief carved throughout with shell and floral motifs. Brass trigger guard with long tang decorated with a soldier on a horse blowing a horn and wearing a tricorne hat, finial with florals and shell motifs. Vacant thumbpiece made of brass and decorated with a stand of arms and topped by a morion. Barrel tang relief carved en suite with rest of wood. Sideplate with two retaining screws depicting a pair of tricorned soldiers on horses and mortar. Flattened and flared butt depicting two more tricorned soldiers firing pistols at each other from horses on one side, opposite side depicting the soldier on the left falling off his horse after being shot. Slightly upraised buttcap with floral. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has been cleaned in the European fashion over old oxidation, leaving spotting throughout. Engraving is crisp and attractive. One chip is missing out of the bottom of the pan. Wood has been sanded and revarnished, leaving it shy to metal but still crisp. One piece of wood is missing behind the lock. Wood has other pressure marks throughout but otherwise free of cracks. Much of the gold inlay at barrel has lifted. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is excellent, smooth, with less oxidation than normally seen. EW
