William Scagel attributed stag handle folding knife with Scagel's (worn) Kris mark on blade. The grandfather of modern knife-makers and knife making lore, William Whales Scagel was active and listed as a knife-maker as early as 1917. His knives appeared in sporting stores advertisements such as V. L. and A of Chicago (and others of NY) as early as 1920. However, he likely made knives as early as 1910 and possibly earlier. Due to Mr. Scagel being an extremely private person, little is known about his early knife maker history. This stag handled folder appears to be one of Scagel's earlier productions. The blade shows use and wear due to sharpening, thereby leaving the stamp showing top half to 2/3 of the Kris mark. The handle is of stag and misc. liner material. Similar blades and stamps can be viewed on pages 78, 94, 154, and 155 of Dr. James Lucie's book "W Scagel, Scagel Handmade, 2010". Other interesting photos including similar internal parts of folders as noted on pages 106 and 107. Other Kris stampings on page 59. Here is an early marked folding knife attributed to William W. Scagel, Fruitport, MI.
