Circa 1835-1838. Relief ground clip point blade with sharpened false edge, marked "J. ENGLISH & HUBERS (reverse) SHEFFIELD WORKS, 3". Waisted ivory handle with nickel silver ferrule and pommel, escutcheons and raised studs on both sides, turned iron ball-end guard. Good reproduction leather sheath with incised decorations, nickel silver mounts, frog stud decorated with bronze boar’s head. CONDITION: Blade shows some scattered pitting and some restoration to deep pits, recently re-polished. Markings are quite good. Nickel inlay on left side of grip is a replacement and grip shows some age cracks and wear, retains a pleasing honey patina. This classic design, its handle perhaps inspired by the early coffin-handle bowies, serves as the logo for the Antique Bowie Knife Association. DMG
